To the editor

The Daily News (“Study focuses on higher education,”

September 8) reported that only 25% of immigrants from

Mexico to California graduated high school, but 86% of

their children did. This should put to rest fears

that Spanish speakers born in the US are not learning

English. In fact, their high school graduation rate is

slightly above the national average of 85% (US Census,

2004).

These graduates attended elementary school before

bilingual education was dismantled in California in

1998. Perhaps bilingual education deserves some of the

credit for their success.
