[Susan notes: Walt Gardner provides the perfect answer to George Will's officious ugliness.]
To the editor
You don't have to be an apologist for the nation's 1, 200 schools of education to realize that closing all of them, as George F. Will urges, will not improve K-12 schools. Despite the ed schools' undeniable flaws, wanna-be teachers cannot be expected to step into a public-school classroom today, armed only with knowledge of their subject. If Will thinks otherwise, I invite him to teach five classes a day in any inner-city school. He wouldn't last a week.
