[Susan notes: The newspaper eliminated the emphasized sentence, but there's plenty more strong material here. And Rog asks the crucial question: For how long will we take it?]

To the editor

A recent editorial says that “the exit exam is to do what it was supposed to do: put pressure on schools and students to improve performance.” FUSD is now flexing its muscles by announcing reassignments intended to scare principals into whipping their students and teachers to improve performance. And how is performance defined? Test scores, test scores and more scores. This is nothing more than an addiction, addiction, addiction!

Those who support this type of mentality are not educators, they are test score addicts. They are franticly using their drug of choice, test scores, looking for the high that big numbers provide. They want to inflict more and more pain to control even our heart beats as we turn each scripted page and paced lesson in a fear induced trance. They need our help for their next fix. They need to see us tremble. They need us to cower. They need us to be crushed on their behalf. They do not have the wisdom to any longer even recognize when learning is taking place. Their myopic view of the world is poisoning our kids desire to learn, squelching teacher’s joy and perverting education. For how long will we take it?
