[Susan notes: Thank you to Reg Felt for pointing out out how un-democratic is the current corporate push for schools to certify students as job ready.]

To the editor

It is not surprising that businesses like the idea of all diploma-wielding high school graduates being certified by an AIMS test as meeting compulsory standards dictated by industry, at whatever cost to the taxpayers.

Pre-qualifying job candidates at public expense and establishing a labor pool of workers with skills required by the prevailing job market are not the intent or responsibility of public education in a free society.

This country got to be the envy of the civilized world by promoting individual strengths and contributions, not by forcing all if its citizens into a standardized mold. That is a communist concept involving central control, a system proven to be the economic downfall of societies all over the world.

And educators tell us it's the students who aren't learning. -
