[Susan notes: I love the brilliant stroke of referring to the U. S. Secretary of Education and company as "colleagues." Disarming genius.

Go forth and do likewise. Commissioner Christensen is standing up for a deep educational principle in which we all have a stake.]

Dear Colleagues:

Enclosed please find a copy of a letter our coalition sent to Nebraska

Commissioner of Education, Doug Christensen, supporting his stance

that high stakes standardized testing is nothing short of educational

malpractice. Our coalition consists of over 500 teachers and parents

dedicated to a truly meaningful education for our children.

We join with Commissioner Christensen in insisting that the United

States Department of Education be the educational partner it professes

to be; that the department begin cultivating and nurturing an attitude

of respect for the professionals in the classroom. The time is now to

acknowledge the disastrous consequences of the legislation which

has reduced our teachers to technicians, further marginalized our

society and allowed for rampant de facto school segregation.
