Secretary Margaret Spellngs

United States Department of Education

400 Maryland Avenue, SW

Washington, D. C. 20202

Dear Secretary Spellings,

We here at the Vermont Society for the Study of Education firmly believe that not only must governmental leaders as yourself lead but in doing so must touch the potentials of reason, decency and humanism in all people. And because the No Child Left Behind Act mocks those potentials and in turn erects walls of ignorance and mistrust, we support those who storm those walls with courage, morality, compannion, vision and wisdom.

That is why we stand shoulder to shoulder with Doug Christensen, Commissioner of Education in the state of Nebraska, who willingly

expressed his contempt of lies, half truths and demagoguery contained in the implementation of the NCLB provisions in his state. If one believes utterly in democracy and the collective reason of properly informed people, it is that person's obligation to talk sensibly and truthfully about public issues and their implications.

We will not banish those problems of American public education by banishing reason or waving wands of political ideology. However, we may have a chance if our political will reflects the betterment of the human community. The No Child Left Behind Act is an assault on our children and the degradation of public educators.

Sincerely yours,

Sid S. Glassner, Executive Director

Vermont Society for the Study of Education

Sid Glassner
