[Susan notes: Good for the writer, for bring this astonishing
statement to the attention of readers. There's a
lot that the Corporado mayor chooses not to
understand.]

To the editor

It was astonishing to read, in "Bloomberg Re-
emphasizes School Control" (news article, Sept.
20), the mayor's statement, "We continue to put
the interest of our students first, and the
interest of the people who work in the system or
benefit from getting contracts in the system
last."

During the past 25 years, as a parent leader,
columnist and now as a teacher, I have criticized
work rules and individual teachers, principals,
custodians and bureaucrats. But never did I ever
think that the interests of staff were mostly
negative and should be put last. Teachers want to
be effective and respected.

The mayor does not understand this and has lost
the support of teachers. He and Chancellor Joel
I. Klein do not understand the importance of
meaningful parent involvement and have alienated
parents as well.

Having such a person exercise overwhelming
control of the school system without any checks
and balances is not desirable or effective.
Mayoral control, which I ardently supported,
needs to be reformed.
