[Susan notes: Now what can I say about this letter, other than it's great!]
To the editor
Readers of Jay Mathews' Nov. 14 column, "Just Whose Idea Was all this Testing?", will get the answer by reading Kathy Emery and Susan Ohanian's 2004 book, Why is Corporate America Bashing our Public Schools? It explains the careful and deliberate path taken by corporate leaders and the politicians who do their bidding toward discrediting our schools, heretofore the backbone of our democracy. None of the disastrous effects of No Corporation Left Behind (NCLB)—"dumbing down the curriculum", conscientious teachers fleeing the profession, sky-rocketing drop-out and push-out rates, to name a few—are "unintended". Emery and Ohanian quote extensively from the documents that reveal the plan. A must read if you are wondering "just whose idea" all this was.
