To the editor

In your editorial of November 24, 2006 you challenge the presentation given by Susan Ohanian on No child Left Behind. The article clearly shows no investigation of the allegations made by Susan. In point of fact, you didn't do the research.

Fact: No Child Left Behind does not ensure reading by all able children at grade level. Not all children will be able to achieve these standards because of learning impairements or mental functioning. What is occuring is that NCLB applies extreme pressure on schools to teach to a specific test that shows children can quickly and efficiently pronounce words. Reading is a communication skill where meaning is critical, but under NCLB meaning is placed as an afterthought.

If you investigated the allegations made by Susan Ohanian and examined current research into the government's own report by the Office of Inspector General (September 2006), you would find a very provocative story about the way NCLB has twisted reading education.

Susan Ohanian is not wrong. Her vehemence for public outcry is well warranted. That is the real story.
