[Susan notes: I sent Miller Examining DIBELS: What it is and What it does, ed. by Ken Goodman, a copy of the New York State Code of Ethics for Educators, and the letter.

For $5.95, you can send the same book. It is part of my $71.40 plan for bringing down NCLB.

For starters, sign the petition. That doesn't cost a thing.]

Dear Rep. Miller

Rep. George Miller

2205 Rayburn House Office Building

Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Rep. Miller:

I send this letter, this book, and this New York State Code of Ethics for Educators because I am a longtime New York state teacher and the book gives a capsule description of how the Reading First mandated use of DIBELS violates that ethical Code. So much of NCLB violates everything we know about how children learn.

I hope you will read this Code of Ethics for Educators and then visit a few classrooms. I recommend Sarah Puglisiís first grade classroom in Oxnard. Her accounts of working with children learning English are so powerful and so poignant that I have given her a page on my website:

Embracing NCLB, a policy outlined by the Business Roundtable in the late Ď80ies, is embracing the destruction of public schools. No, we donít want more money for NCLB. Surely, dumping more money into bad policy is a definition of insanity, not to mention child abuse.

Please reconsider. Democrats will not regain the White House if they canít show a better way.

Sincerely,

Susan Ohanian
