Re “Putting More Profit Before Education” (editorial,

May 19):

It’s nice to read that Education Secretary Margaret

Spellings has cleaned up the corruption and cronyism

in the awarding of grants under Reading First.

Unfortunately, it’s a little like closing the barn

door after the horses have fled.

What of the millions of dollars that have already been

spent on unproven literacy programs, textbooks and

support materials, based on self-serving

recommendations and even coercion by members of the

Reading First grant review panels and the program’s

administrators?

Sorry, we’ll never do it again doesn’t rectify the

damage already done.

The writer is associate professor of literacy

education at Mercy College.
