[Susan notes: This is an important letter, challenging as it does, the notion that teachers are any longer independent and doing something like "redefining education." The writer gives excruciating detail to bolster her point.

The Broad Foundation and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are redefining education. No teachers need apply.

Thousands more teachers need to write their local newspapers making this point.]

Teachers aren't independent

Overall, the story, "Education by the numbers" [News, Sept. 30], was accurate on the current state of education after five years of No Child Left Behind. However, a major error was in the subheading on page four regarding how "teachers are redefining education." Teachers do not do the redefining, we do what we are told to do by the federal government, the state government, and most of all, our school district. School districts have people who work in offices all day long creating pacing guides, benchmark exams, and schedules (come see my K-6 Handbook ΓΆ€“ more than 300 pages of directions) so that test-related instruction can be completed by the testing dates in the spring. Please don't blame the teachers for this mess. We already take the blame for every other problem in education.
