Dear Senator Obama:

I am not an educator, but I witness first-hand the effects the No Child Left Behind policy has on youngsters. In my profession, which integrates emotional well-being with the physical, I have occasion to work with children who are incredibly stressed out from the school workload that is sent home with them nightly to prepare for tests that no one in the field seems to field are valid.

A 13-year-old girl came into my office the other day. I was treating her for back pain, but during the course of her session, the subject of school came up. Even her mother was shocked to hear how stressed out the girl is. She told me the stress from the daily workload for her and her friends is constant.

I also work with teachers whose stress is as great as that of the 13-year-old.

I don't understand what the U. S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions has in mind when it insists on legislation that thoroughly demoralizes children and their teachers. Read this book, When Childhood Collides with NCLB and you will be hit in your heart. Your legislation is destroying a generation of young learners--and their teachers.

Your presidential campaign gives people hope. I sincerely urge you to extend that hope to children and teachers.
