Testing Genre

Ohanian Comment: Testing genre is a new term for me. Absolutely accurate term. This letter is from a Wisconsin Education Association package of educators' and student stories about testing. From this article you can get a hot link to the entire package.

by Laura Netzinger, Teacher, Sauk Prairie School District.

We had 5th grade testing over a two week period. It created a two week delay in doing social studies curriculum since I used that time to prep the kids for testing, as some districts actually take a whole month doing a testing genre – the questions and answers are quite different for testing this way verses what we give in our classrooms. It also created a two week delay in teaching language arts writing because that’s when we gave the test. I feel like we have spent the whole first quarter just assessing kids! We have to do the district assessments in September and October, and then we are hit with the standardized testing. When do we make up for the lost time with all these assessments? I thought school environment was supposed to be more fun and interesting than this for kids to learn.
