CSAP in Colorado

by Yvonne Siu-Runyan

I have the privilege of working with young people - one of my joys. Keeps me sane.

After two weeks of taking the CSAP - Colorado's High Stakes Test in response to the NCLB act, several individuals have commented about it:

STUDENTS:

  • I just wrote stupid on the test. Then I filled in any bubble. Lots of the kids did the same. We're sick of those tests.

  • The kids whose parents don't let them take the test are treated badly by the principal.

  • The principal said that the school gets $150.00 for every student who takes the test.

  • That stupid test doesn't say anything.

  • How can they expect students who have been in the our country for only 3 years to take this test?

  • I don't even understand some of the test items. They just don't make sense.

  • PARENTS:

  • My daughter is so stressed out over the test, she hates it. Oh well...at least she is learning how to take tests.

  • What can I do? I feel pressure from the principal and teachers.

  • I told my daughter to take the test, because she's one kid in the school who can bring the school's ratings up.

  • ________ School has high ratings, and when I tell my friends that my children go to ________, they think I am being irresponsible for sending my children to a _______ School. I want my children to experience diversity, not just rich, white kids.
