NCLB Outrages

NCLB: A Vision for the Future...A Roadmap to Disaster,

A Power Point presentation of Nebraska education commissioner Doug Christensen's speech NCLB: A Vision for the Future...A Roadmap to Disaster, given at the annual NCTE Convention in Nashville, November 19, 2006, is available at the url below.

Doug's talk was personal, poignant, and powerful. Characterizing NCLB as something "secretively created" and "mean-spirited," he pulled no punches in his descriptions of NCLB:

  • NCLB isn't going to get us anywhere we want to go.

  • I am angry as hell about NCLB. . . .

  • There's nothing about NCLB that I want to spend my time with. . . .

  • I am angry about what NCLB could be--national policy about families and children. . . a vision of social justice and equality. . . .

  • toxic, poisonous. . . it sucks the oxygen out of schools

  • A teacher himself, and living in the midst of teachers, Doug declared, "I am not the kind of person who will walk through my profession with their dirty boots."

Take a look at the Power Point.
