Little ol' Margaret La Montagne

Indeed.

by Ken Herman

Margaret Spellings, secretary of education

A former Texas legislative aide who did a six-year stint in Austin as senior adviser to then-Gov. Bush, concentrating on education reform. She came to Washington as assistant to the president for domestic policy. Bush appointed her secretary of education in January 2005.

A Michigan native who grew up in Houston, she spends much of her time now defending Bush's No Child Left Behind education program.

"It's been a constant stream of pinch-me moments," she said. "Who would have thought that little ol' Margaret La Montagne" -- her name before marrying Robert Spellings of Austin -- "would be up here wheeling and dealing."
