Twiggs County Pre-K Gets Grant

A frequently purchased program for Early Reading First is the DLM Early Childhood Express, published by the Wright Group/McGraw-Hill, who indicate the company "offers multiple professional development resources, ongoing support, and opportunities for customized training."

What is troubling is the children who are "not ready" for phonics drill and who will be labeled failures.

Think of how many real books one could buy with $3 million.

The Twiggs County public schools have been awarded a grant of more than three-million dollars to teach pre-schoolers to read.

In partnership with Head Start, Even Start and Twiggs County Pre-K, teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff will undergo training to support achievement in language, vocabulary, knowledge of sounds and knowledge of books.

Parents will also receive training to assist their children in using books that Early Reading First will give to each child during their three and four year old pre-school years.

Twiggs County is one of only 32 counties across the nation to receive this award.
