Book Review: When Childhood Collides with NCLB

by Dr. Cindy Lutenbacher, Morehouse College:

Oh. My. Freaking. God. I found myself re-reading parts aloud, just to hear the music. I'd grab Ro to read her parts of the poetry. Parts kicked me so hard in the gut I had to stop and tickle a dog, just to stay sane. But for the most part I felt myself to be in a hallowed space of linguistic enchantment, political camaraderie, and spiritual power. The book is magnificent and I'm so glad that VSSE published it. I think a commercial publisher would have killed it.

Over and over, I heard myself thinking, Holy shit. . . that woman can by-god WRITE. And the. . . I haven't done enough to stop this insanity. . . And then. . . what is NCLB really about. . . is this long nightmare of national denial (of genocide, slavery, brutality, imperialism, on and on) culminating in killing our children, once again? And then. . . As much as I don't want to create trouble for the blessed angels who are my child's teachers, I don't think I can allow her to be "tested". . . And then. . . well, hell, I don't know where to stop.

I do know that I want to share this book with teachers and education folk whom I love.
