Ask for an Accounting

by Susan Ohanian

Readers of this site know that from time to time I quote horrendous and shameful statistics about institutional child neglect in the highest places in this country. I quote from Every Child Matters.

About a year ago I collaborated with the Kings/Tulare unit of the California Teachers Association to produce a handout using quite shocking Every Child Matters statistics. These statistics show where each state is really behind when it comes to children.

On October 14 and 15, 2008, Every Child Matters ran a great ad in Newsday. Go to the url below and take a look. Send this ad to the person in Congress who claims to be your representative.

Study the ad, and then ask yourself why our professional organizations and our unions are so silent on the real issues of children being left behind.

Ask yourself and then do more. Demand an accounting from the outfits to which you pay hefty dues. Send along the ad to the executive directors/presidents of those organizations to accompany your demand for an accounting.

After all, the NEA top officials, to name just one organization, earn eight times a teacher's pay, so they should be able to answer your questions.
