The NCTE/IRA Alignment Problem

by Susan Ohanian

Take a look at Pearson's "sell" for the Stanford 10 test. Throughout, it says "aligned with IRA/NCTE standards and state standards, the Stanford 10. . . ." They repeat it: "aligned with IRA/NCTE standards"; "aligned with IRA/NCTE standards."

People will read this as NCTE being aligned with the tests.

Moral: When people don't stand up for what's right--and refuse to participate in standards--then they become complicit in the great harm done to children.

Question: What will the fallout be from the failure of professional organizations and unions to speak out against the Common Core?

What will it take to get teachers to demand that their professional organizations and unions to act in the best interest of children?
