NCLB Outrages

Not Highly Qualified AND a Terrorist

Ohanian Notes: We need a few less good little soldiers doing their jobs and a few more resisters, regardless of their grades in Graphs and Calculus.

After 20 years of service, a Master's Degree, and a C. A. S.[Certificate of Advanced Study], I now find I'm newly identified as not highly qualified and a terrorist.

All the Feds are concerned about is the not-so-great grade I received 30 years ago in a "Graphs and Calculus" course I took during my freshman year at the University of Connecticut. Like I would really use that to help
teach first and second grade math.

To clarify a bit, it's not the Feds who actually looked at my old grades. It was the Vermont DOE whose interpretation of NCLB's requirements led them to inspect my transcripts. Can you believe it? I am SO furious at the DOE and our governor and their handling of this affair. Just like good little soldiers, doing their jobs. The DOE sent a total of 2,800 "Unable to be determined" Highly Qualified Teacher Status notifications, with no explanations as to what was lacking.
