In Defense of Childhood

Susan Notes:

A renewed federal focus on early childhood education is not good news if the educationists bow to the corporate politicos as they did with NCLB.

A group of people who care about Early Childhood AND know a lot about it has put up a website. The Goals of In Defense of Childhood are:

1. to develop and implement a public information, engagement, and advocacy campaign, with outreach to educators, parents, policymakers, and others concerned about the well-being of our nation̢۪s children;

2. to cultivate multi-faceted media coverageâ€"including print, broadcast, and web-basedâ€"that focuses on the broader picture of childhood and the need for creative play and hands-on learning; and

3. to realign the education and professional development of early childhood educators with the tenets of experiential learning.

The In Defense of Childhood website has posted a good bibliography which includes the following topics:

  • Detrimental Effects of Lack of Play

  • How to Integrate Creative Play and Hands-on Learning into the Early Childhood Classroom

  • Overall Importance of Play in Children’s Lives

  • Physical Advantages of Play and Outdoor Play

  • Play and Cognitive Development

  • Play and Policy

  • Play and Social-emotional development

  • Relationship of Play to Academic Success

  • Teacher’s Role in Integrating Play and Hands-on Learning
