A New Library for the Edward Williams Elementary School

Susan Notes: This news is really good.

You undoubtedly remember Michael Winerip's powerful description of the state of the library at Edward Williams Elementary School in Mount Vernon, New York. Winerip pointed to the savage inequalities readily visible on the library shelves of a poor school.

As is so typical of Winerip's work, that piece touched hearts across America, and new books began pouring in to Edward Williams Elementary.

And now, a little more than a year later, I just received an invitation to attend a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the opening of the Joan V. Morrison Memorial Library at the Edward Williams Elementary School in Mount Vernon. An insert to the invitation lists the names of all the people and institutions sending donations.

Most of the donors are, like me, individuals, but a few publishers, newspapers, and universities also donated. Comedian Bill Cosby sent 20 books. The Scholastic Foundation mailed 15 boxes of books; World Book Encyclopedia pledged a new reference set. Rachel Robinson, the founder of the Jackie Robinson Foundation in Manhattan, sent 24 books about her husband.

We're all invited to the ribbon cutting ceremony.

And let's remember it all happened because New York Times education columnist Michael Winerip has a big heart as well as a very good eye and ear for the details that tell a story in a way that convinces readers they can and will change the world.
