A Kindergartner's Contribution to Your Day

Susan Notes: There's been a dearth of good news lately, so it was nice to come across this in the Dear Diary, section of the New York Times. This feature runs every Monday and chronicles life in the city. It is my favorite part of the paper, certainly lots better than their abominable editorial coverage of education.

Dear Diary:

On a bright and sunny day, all of the youngsters in school participated in the regularly scheduled fire drill. As director of early childhood education, I was at my post assuring the safe exit of all the classes.

One class of kindergartners left the building still munching on their snacks.

As the children returned to their classrooms, one little boy, Tani, motioned for me to come over to his line.

He asked, "Did you see what we were eating when we left the building?"

"Yes of course," I answered. "You were eating graham crackers."

"No," Tani replied with the slightest hint of a smile. "They were fire crackers."
