Congratulations, Georgia!

Susan Notes: Georgia Hedrick is a consummate child advocate, and it is heartwarming to know other people have noticed--on a national level.

Georgia often notes that retiring from the classroom doesn't mean that a teacher, a real teacher, ever leaves behind her passion for justice for children.

First, our own cartoonist, Georgia Hedrick was honored by the Washoe Unit of the Nevada State Retired Teachers Association for her meritorious volunteer work. Now, Georgia has just been named recipient of the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA) Dedication Award:
Georgia Hedrick: author, illustrator, lecturer, youth worker and book missionary.

One example of Georgia's book missionary work is her dedication in finding children who need a book. She carries a box of books to bus stops, laundromats, and other places where she might find poor parents with young children. When she finds likely children, she invites them to choose a book from her box. A book to keep. She asks that parents pledge to read with their children. Many children she meets have never owned a book.

Another of Georgia's truly meritorious projects has been to get a statue of Sarah Winnemucca, Paiute Indian author and human rights activist, erected in Washington D. C. to represent the state of Nevada.

Georgia's book for kids about Sarah, Sarah's Story, will be placed in Reno schools. Watch Georgia's website for a picture of the title page. Take a look now at e-books available.

Congratulations, Georgia!
