Salt Lake City, Utah â August 6, 2001

The SchoolMatch® Institute and the Public Education Support Group have initiated the âCourageous Legislator Award.â A legislator who courageously supports public education will be recognized annually. The first award will be announced at the annual meeting of the Horace Mann League to be held in February 2008 in Tampa, Florida.

The Public Education Support Group is a national organization that assists superintendents and works to intensify support for public schools. M. Donald Thomas serves as executive director. The SchoolMatch® Institute, affiliated with the University of Dayton, is a highly respected research and school data provider established in 1986. William L. Bainbridge serves as chief executive officer. Thomas and Bainbridge, both former superintendents of schools and state education agency officials, have provided educational services to school districts, corporations, newspapers, business groups and chambers of commerce in all 50 states and a number of foreign countries.

Thomas said, âOur schools are the basis for an effective democracy. Legislators need to be defenders of public schools and exhibit the courage of former Massachusetts legislator Horace Mann. Known as the founder of American Public Education, Mann was secretary of the nationâs first state board of education in 1837.

âCourageous legislators are the bedrock of an equitable and adequate education,â Bainbridge said. âThis award will honor individuals who often take unpopular stands to support public education and our students.â Nominations are now being accepted by SchoolMatch® and the Public Education Support Group until January 1, 2008. The final selection will be made by a distinguished panel of educators.
