The Coalition for Better Education Bus Bench Campaign

Susan Notes:

Informing parents of their right to opt their children out of the state test is an annual event for the Coalition for Better Education, and each year it gets better. They advertise at bus stops. Read a history of this remarkable resistance group.

Don Perl of the Coalition for Better Education reports that the Coalition has raised enough money the bus bench campaign. Very soon they will have a billboard on I-25 heading south of Pueblo alerting parents of their right to exempt their children from the state test.

In January, they will have 20 bus benches in Denver with the same message. And there may be something in northern Colorado as well.

Kudos!

The CBE site provides opt out letters in English and en Espaƅ„ol.

Here is the short form:

Please be advised that my child, ___________________________________, will not be participating in CSAP testing during the current school year. I understand that the law provides the parent or guardian the right of choice regarding this standardized testing. In my opinion, such testing is not in the best interests of our children since it promotes competition instead of cooperation, and blunts, not stimulates, our children's curiosity. I understand, too, that the school will provide appropriate learning activities during testing times. I request that no record of CSAP testing be part of my child's permanent file.
