New York Legislator Stands Against Test Over-Emphasis

Susan Notes:

I wrote New York Assemblyman Weprin, thanking him for his strong voice against excessive standardized testing.

January 8, 2008

Dear Ms. Ohanian:

This is to acknowledge the receipt of your recent email letter in
support of my comments regarding the over-emphasis on testing in New
York City̢۪s public schools. Thank you for taking the time to write and
for providing me with the opportunity to respond.

As the father of two New York City public school students, I will
continue to advocate for curricula that include art, music, civics,
physical education, and field trips. Schools should not focus on
preparing students for standardized tests, and the City should not be
basing schools̢۪ grades on results from high-stakes tests. I assure you
that I will continue to fight to preserve the integrity and quality of
our children̢۪s education.
