Bing and Ingrid Argue School Standards

Susan Notes:

Watch this short segment from "The Bells of St. Mary's" where at a big city Catholic school, Father O'Malley and Sister Benedict argue about grades and standards.

Father O'Malley asks where the "standard" of 75 for passing came from.

Sister Benedict: Do you believe in passing everyone, Father?

Father O'Malley: Maybe. Maybe I do. . . . Are we here to give children a helping hand or to measure their brains with a yard stick.

Father O'Malley's final remark on this clip whould be engraved on the front door of every school.

Closing the school would be better than breaking their hearts.
