August to June: education that respects the whole child.

Susan Notes:

This film should help us all continue the fight--even increase the fight. I've posted it on Twitter, on Facebook, on http://www.StopNationalTesting.org.

This film of an open classroom, grades 3-4, in northern California, is beautiful and inspiring. It provides many joyful images of why we are fighting this fight.

On Stop National Standards, I filed this under "Expertise." Savvy teachers among you will see why. This is the portrait of teacher expertise. . . and student wholeness.

Admittedly, this took me down memory lane. Eons ago, I had an open classroom K-6 that had a very similar spirit to this one, a place where students flourished. And so did their teacher. How many young teachers today even know of the existence of such classrooms?

Any experienced teacher watching this film can see the many things going on--the respect for students, the struggles, the joy, the variety, the wonderful busyness and moments of quiet reflection within that busyness. How many people working in the U. S. Department of Education would have a clue about why and how these teacher is an expert?

Watch this film and know why we must continue this fight so that ALL children can know such joy, such genuine learning.
