Some Wonderful Happenings in the Latino Community

Susan Notes:

You can see Georgia's beautiful bilingual books and Amazon.com and at Lulu.com. At the latter site, enclose her name in quotation marks.

There is a woman in the Reno area, Florence G Philips, up in her 80's
that has a free tutorial program for those who wish to learn English.
So, I signed on to be a tutor. It is all volunteer. She has set up
her program as a 5013c corporation so that she can get grants to pay
for the books she needs. Six of us who volunteered to tutor met last
Sunday for orientation. She works with volunteers from Americorps. And
anyone else who wishes to help. It is a one-on-one program. We go to
the home or meet in a common place, like a library, student's choice.

This program has been in existence for a few years now. But, I only
heard about it recently when this woman won an award.

One on one. What a dream way to teach! And, as you would expect,
Florence has a long, long waiting list of Latino people wanting to
learn English. All she needs is: more volunteer tutors. And I am
just one more volunteer.

It is my opinion that, like Stephen Krashen says, unless one reads the
books to the children and with the child, education will not happen.
Language, any language, will not be learned. It is my reason for
writing bilingual children's books. The parents MUST read with the
children and to the children, in any language, in both languages.

I just wanted everyone to know that this program exists, that someone
in her 80's is spearheading it, and that rarely does something this
good happen for free. But, it does.
