Teachers Speaking Out

Susan Notes: 3 cheers for teachers and parents speaking out. We need more such grass roots movements, letting elected officials know we're mad as hell.

50 years after the Brown decision, education in California is still separate, still equal, so parents, teachers, and students are marching to the capitol. the started the March on April 9 and will arrive at the capitol stemps on April 16. Go to the url below for more information.

Marchers' letter to the Governor

The Honorable Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

We are members of the March 4 Education; a grassroots movement of parents, students teachers and community members concerned with the sad state of our educational system in California. We are in the middle of our 70 mile march from San Pablo to Sacramento.

We are writing to you from a church in Dixon, where we are staying tonight on the road. It is imperative that you meet with the people who you represent. On Friday, April 16th, from 1 to 3 pm, we have a hearing room at the State Capital that Senator Tom Torlakson has arranged for us to meet in.

We have been in contact with your office since March 25th. We are aware that you are on vacation and want you to know that we feel that education is an important enough issue that we have dedicated our vacation time to walk to Sacramento to meet with you. We ask you to make our children a priority and meet with us.

March 4 Education Committee

The marchers have attempted to speak with the Governor and have heard that he is vacationing at the Four Seasons Hotel in Maui.

There is no vacation for education! After marching 70 long miles, over the course of 8 days, students, parents, taxpayers and citizens are demanding a meeting with the Governor.

We await to see if his vacation in Maui is more important than hearing students who have sacrificed so much just to meet with him.
