Five Practical Uses for a Vintage Manual Typewriter

Susan Notes:

OK, the article gives five practical uses for a manual typewriter. Here's the one I like. My classrooms always had typewriters available for student use. Of course this was pre-computer time but I like what's happening in this first grade.

First-grade teacher Brad Coulter provides vintage manual typewriters to each of his 17 students at Lakeview Elementary School in Kirkland, Wash. "I found that [the students] took to them right away at first because of the novelty," he said. But it was their tactile nature that gave a more enduring appeal—"the sound of the letter hitting the page and making the image pressed into the paper," he said. "My students often come back after recess, begging to type more." And he added, "they're more careful about their spelling."
